Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has announced that LGBTQ+ Pride parades will no longer be permitted in the streets of Budapest.
During an interview with local radio station Radio Kossuth on Feb. 28, Orban, a long-time advocate of Christian-conservative policies, claimed that the support for Pride parades in Hungary was previously driven by the involvement of former U.S. Ambassador David Pressman. However, he argued that this event should not take place in the streets of Budapest as it is detrimental to children.
“But now there has been a change in the world,” Orban noted. “So, this kind of thing is no more. It’s over now,” Orban added, stating that it “shouldn’t have been necessary before either.” (Related: LGBT activists attack Italian pro-life group’s headquarters for second time in 10 days.)
Orban also cited that such events go against the “opportunity for our children’s healthy, balanced development as desired by their parents,” as most people in Hungary still believe in the traditional concept of two genders.
In line with this, Orban also suggested during a state address on Feb. 22 that Pride organizers in Hungary “should not bother preparing” for the event, which was initially set for June, arguing that it would be “a waste of time and money.”
Aside from the radio interview, Gergely Gulyas, the chief of staff for Orban, announced plans to amend the country’s constitution to define gender as “biologically male or female” and to enshrine in law “that a child’s right to physical, mental and moral development takes precedence over all other considerations.”
In 2020, Budapest effectively prohibited same-sex adoption, with Orban’s office stating that the measure bolstered “the protection of Hungarian families and the safety of our children.”
A year later, Hungary implemented a law prohibiting the dissemination of content related to gender transition or homosexuality to individuals under 18. The European Commission criticized the law, asserting that it contravened “multiple EU regulations” and infringed upon “human dignity, freedom of expression and the right to information.”
In 2022, the European Commission referred Hungary to the EU’s Court of Justice over this ban, arguing that it discriminates against individuals based on their sexual orientation and gender identity.
However, Hungary stands firm with its stance when it recently proposed a constitutional amendment that would emphasize that a child’s right to physical, mental and moral development takes precedence over all other rights, except the right to life. This change, according to Gulyas, is designed to clarify the “collision between the right to assembly and children’s right to healthy development.”
“The collision between the right to assembly and children’s right to healthy development needs to be clarified,” he said, adding that “those with sharp ears” could hear that the constitutional amendment was related to Pride. “The country does not have to tolerate Pride marching through downtown Budapest.”
